CASUALTIES.
(H__Sa ASSOCIATION TELEGBAIi.) AUCKLAND, March 17. A fatality occurred at Newmarket yesterday during a fire, by which two cottages were burned. Archibald Anderson, a turncock in tho employ of the Council, wa» turning tho water off from an adjoining houae, when the chimney, which had been weakened by the fire, fell on _Un, killing him instantly. Excitement was caused in St. Stephen's Avenue-, Parnell, at eight o'clock last evening by several revolver -hats. A search di_scovered a young man on tha groind with a five-chambered revolver by his aide. All the chambers had been recently discharged. The man said he had been a member of a New Zealand contingent, and fave the name of Robeit Tait. He- had een rejected by the young woman with whom he was keeping company. He is between 25 and 30 years old. Ho admitted shooting at hum elf. and stated that his intention was to die for the girl. Dr. Muckellar made an examination, and discovered no wound. Tait was arrested' on a charge of attempted suicide. NAPIER, March 17. Tlie young girl McGloue, who was so severely injured in the lire which destroyed the Shamrock Hotel, at Awrutoto this morning, died in the hospital to-night.
