The Duckcnfield completed safely last night the long tow of the Samuel Piimsoil from Port Chalmers. ALLUVIAL GOLD FIND. PERTH, ______ 17. An alluvial find is reported from the Black Range. Eighty men on the ground all found payable gold. On the first day seventy ounces were found, including a sixteen-ounce slug. THE QUEENSLAND CYCLONE. BRISBANE, March 17. The damage done by tho recent cyclone j in the Ayr district is estimated'at £33,000. ATTEMPTED WIFE-MURDER AND SUICIDE. (Received March 17th, 10.6 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 17. Another domestic tragedy is reported at Brunswick. A man named John Grimes, in a sudden frenzy, attacked his wife with a tomahawk. Through the courageous Interference of his daughter, Mrs Grimee escaped with slight injuries. Grimes in the meantime fatally cut his own throat. He had suffered from depression through losing his work. VISIT FROM JAPANESE SQUADRON. (Received March 18th, 1.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 17. Advice has been received that three of the largest warships in the Japanese Navy, the Matsusbima (bearing the flag of RearAdmiral Kaminaira). and the cruisers Itsukushima and Hnehidate, are en route for Australia and New Zealand. They are scheduled to reach Hobart on May 6th, thence proceed to Auckland, arriving there May 18th. Advantage i_ being taken of the long cruise to train a large number of midshipmen. [The ilatsMshima, of 4277 tons, w_s built in 1890, the Itsukushima, of 3150 tons, in 1892, and the Haehidate, of 4277 tons, in 1891. Each carries 350 men, and the anna ment of each vessel includes one 12.5-in gun and eleven 4.7 in quick-firing guns.]
