INCREASING THE ORDER.

United Press Association—By Ekotrlo Telegraph—"Copyright. (Received March 16th ; 8.47 a.m.) LONDON, March 15. The King has increased the number of Grand Crosses of St. Michael George to one hundred, of Knight Comniandershipe of the Order to three hundred, and Companions to cix hundred. The most . distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George woe eetablisbed in 1818 to commemorate the British Protectorate of the lonian Islands. At first it was limited to nativea of theee islands and Malta. In 1832 its three Classes were fixed at the numbers of 15, 20, and 25 respectively, but it was enlarged in 1868, 1877, 1879, and 1887, till it became assignable to any person rendering valuable eervioas in Colonial or Foreign affairi. The decorations are the Badge, Star,- Collar, Ribbon, Mantle, and Chapeau. Whitaker's Peerage for 1902 gave the number of Knight* of the Grand Crose at 65, Knights Commanders 200, and Companions 342. The Foreign Office may designate 20 of the first class, 45 of the second, and 80 of the third.
