Mr J. Mcßae (Wellington), Mr Bruoe, Mr P. J. Cox (Melbourne), and Mr R. Morton are now in town. Mr S. Nettlefold, Mr D. King, Mr J. Boss, and Mr D. Barrow went South by the express yesterday. Mr B. N. Nicholla and Mr Fraeer returned from Hanmer yesterday. Mr E.tHoney (Dunedin), Mr B. TrunneU (Wellington). Air F. Millward, Mr P. M. Thomson, Miss Stead, and Mr and Mrs Assley were passengers from the South by the express last evening. Captain K. Van Oterendorp, master of the San Francisco mail steamer Sonoma, has retired from the sea, after over fifty years' service. Mt T. Rose, Inspector of Post Offices, is at present on a visit to Chrietchurch, and yesterday inepected the sit© far the Kaiapoi Post Office. Miss Grace Hocktey, a pupil of M. Malaqudn, of Christchurch, has just gained first-class honours in French composition as the result of a paper given for competition by the editor of "The Practical Teacher," London. The Civil.Service Rifles presented Lieut. W. H. Adams on Thtrredaj- with a case of pipes and a silver match box, from, the con-commissioned officers, and a silver teapot, sugar basin, and milk-jug from the corps generally, on the occasion of his Uansfennent to Invercargill. The ceremony took place in the corps' orderly-room, asd about fifty members wea?e present. A number of toasts were honoured and somji given. Tlie Rev. W. Cuff, of Shoreditch Tabernacle, London, ie visiting the colonies, and is to preach in tha Oxford Terrace Baptist Church on Sunday week.
