"The Times" is astonished at the "North German Gazette's*" unfairness in refraining to quote and in •misrepresenting Mr Chamberlain, who, with the whole of the Government and the nation, indignantly repudiate the accma.tions of cruelty. He had simply enumerated till© measures taken in the previous wars of different countries whddh were severer than those adopted by Great Baitain, aud ib had not been admitted that these countries had done anything wrong. The sensitiveness of the Germans Was not justified by anything Mr C_a_jjberlam had said. "We," continues "The Times," "equally with the Germans, are entitled to guard our honour and resent Jtoteful and poisonous o-tfirmnies. The belief t__b the war is conducted ferociously rests- on a propaganda of mendacity and malignity genetfating international illfeeling." Sir Henry Campbell-Banner-__—'s deniinciaitioins of the methods as barbarism- had. furnished a pretext for the illWi_«.
The "Stondaai-" and "Daily Chronicle" warn Germany of the danger of tolerating unlicensed abuse ot> Eng-takt. The "Daily News" says the German Govenunenit has been drive—, to tihe unusual course, and is conscious that it cannot afford to put itself in the wrong in the face of tlie opinion of a powerfully and angrily expressed agitation which has doubtless been conducted with some injustice to th* British Army.
