THE EFFECT ON NEW ZEALAND.

A comparison of the cargoes shipped to Sydney from New Zealand by the Wesrralia on her last few trips, remarks the "Post," gives a good idea of the effect which the new Federal tariff is likely to have on this colony's exportations. In September 906 tons were taken from New Zealand by the ship, made up of 577 sacks oats, 75 sacks' wheat, 7246 sacks potatoes, '26 sacks'"peas, 563 bales hay, 120 cases bacon, 64 cases cheese, 149 bales flax, 86 casks tal--I<jw, 19 sacks hides, 11 bales hops, and 62 tons sundries. . On the 9th October the new tariff came into force, and the first trip which the Westralia made to Sydney after that date she carried a cargo which showed that the duties by the Federal Gqvernmen had decided ".exporters to abandon the Australian market. Only 730 tons were shipped, included in which were 7353 sacks of potatoes,-43 sacks peas, 9 cases bacon, 9 oases cheese, 60 bales tow, and ten tons sundries. Not a sack of oats, wheat, barley, flour, oatmeal, malt, seed or hides, was on, board, nor a, case,- balei or cask of tinned, milk, hay,'flax, hops, twine, skins, -or tal-~ low. ' For a while potatoes wiU be sent to Sydney in much the -same quantities as. for-merly,-bub when the local growers are able' to supply'the demands of the market, the falling off in cargo, carriers' receipts will he considerable. If those 7353 sacks of potatoes had not been sent by tbe'Westralia last Sat-, urday, there would have been only 62 tons of. cargo in the'ship's holds, instead of 730 tons.
