A Colonial Club dinner was held in honour of Sir George Sydenham Clarke, the newly-appointed Governor of Victoria, Responding to the toast of his health; Sir George Clarke said the Commonwealth was a monument to statesmanship, showing the political sagacity of the Australian people, and was the first step towards Imperial federation. The Commonwealth required the development and protection of her maritime commerce, and cheap cable and postal communication. The war in South Africa had~shown that Great Britain oughi to exhibit the same constructive statesmanship as Australia had given such an auspicious example of.
