FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR TENDALL.
»— I Tto funeral of the late Air G. F. Tendall, for many years organist at the Ghrisfcefeurch Cathedral, took place yesterday. At an early hour the casket containing the body of the deceased was brought from th« Port Hills and paced" upon a trestlo in the north.porch of thto Cathedral, covered with a white and purple pall. Numbers of beautiM floral tributes were brought here and arranged along the surface of th*; coffin, among them being ■wreaths from Bishop and Mrs Julius, Canon and Mrs Dunkley, Misses Jacobs,. Mr A. J. W. Bunz, the " Cathedral choristers, Mr H. M. Lund, Mr and Mrs A. J. Merton, Mr A. Evans, the Society of Professional " Musicians, the Diocesan* Choral Association, and others. At ten o'clock the tower bell was slowlytolled, and then a" subdued melody was heard from the organ, a famili&r air from Stainer's '"Crucifixion"-—"God so loved the yr<n\d." When tie bell bad ceased toll- ! ing, and the music from the organ had died away, the procession of Cathedral choristers, followed by the Bishop and a 1 number of prominent clergy, made its way through thte middle aisle of the Cathedral from the little tower door. As the end of the procession reaohed the cross aisle joining the north and south doors, the coffin was lifted away from the stand, and carried on the shoulders of sis fellow musicians of Che deceased—Messrs P. M. Wallace, R. T. Seare'il, H. M. Lund, A. J. Merton, D. Hunt, annd H. Welie—to : another high trestle placed at thte foot ■of the choir sta.ls. In addition to Bishop Julius there were present, forming part of i the procession , , Archdeacon Harper, Canon j Harper, Archdeacon Oholmondeley, Canon ' Knowles, Rev. W. Dunkley, Rer. C. R. i Pollock, and Mr C E. .Bevan-Brown.. The interior of the CatfoedTat was well filled, and many of thte visiting members of the Diooesan" Synod were present among the congregation. Meanwhile t&e opening words of the Burial Service, beginning, "I am the Resurrection and the Life," ■were intoned by Canon Harper as the coffin was being carried to t>h« easb end of the ornuoh.. A hymn was then sung i —"Jesus lives," and the 90th Psalm fol- ; lowed; The lesson, taken from Corinthians, I beginning, "Now "is Christ risen from tiite dead," was read by the Bishop The anthem was "Blesfc are the departed." Some prayers followed, and a second hymn . was enng—''On the Resurrection /morning , } during which the choir left the church, . followed by the clergy and -the bearers ~ carrying tine coffin. Mendelssohn's "Funeral March ,P was played by the organist, Miss : Ross, when the hymn had ended. The coffin was placed upon an open : hearse, and the cortege proceeded to t!he ; Linwood cemetery. The bearers followed the hearse on foot, and several carriages (including one containing Mr G. E. Tendall, Mrs Tendatt, and two daughters) came after.' The Cathedral choir, togethter with , the sidesmen and a few others, went ahead 'to the cemetery, and met the ihearse at r "the gates. 1 !• The service at the grave was short but : impressive. The .choir arranged themselves 'in a half-circle around the grave, and I sang two liymns during the service: I "Brief life "is ibere our portion," and "Now j the labourer's tasfc is o'er." The remaining party of .the Burial Service was read by ' the Bishop and Canon Harper. r "At St. Mark's .Church, Opawa, on Sun-, ■ day . everting,-.- the" hymo, "The saints of i God," was sung, and at the conclusion of the 1 service' Chopin's 'TFuneral March" was ! played by the orgacist, "Mr Clarence Turner, ■ as a tribute to the memory' of, thte late Mr Tendall. .. Afc the Diocesan, Synod yestenday even- ; ing, Canon Harper gave notice to move to-day/"That this: Synod desires to express ots soirnw a* the loss sustained by the Church by the death of Mr GF, P.'Tebdall, for fifteen years organist of the. Chrisfcchurch Cathedral, and to record it*' sense of his. high character'and of the ability -with which he discharged the-duties of hie office, and. that the President be reepecfcfullv asked to forward this resolution to ; Mrs! Tendall."
