RETIREMENT OP BEAN AND CANONS.; -The first order of the day was the third reading of Mr H. t>. ' Andrews's Bill to amend the Cathedral Statute, 1894. . ; . Mr-Andrews stud that he' had no desire that the Bill should pass- into law without the Srnod being fully aware, of its proTiHions." He therefore 'thought it I desirable that, in moving the third reading, J ha should call the attention, of the Synod jto the provisions of the Bill. Bevah-Brown moved the fonow. amendment: —"That this Synod is of opinion that in appointments to cures the main object should undoubtedly be to obtain J the best man for the position, bnfc that at j the same time the nominators should, care- \ fully consider tvheth** some clergyman who j has been -pome time in the diocese cannot sui-tftbly fill the position." His Lordship the President said that he had received a letter froni Mr B. J. S. Harinan, expressing very great regret sit the subject having been brought up before the Synod and his earnest desfre that if it might ba dealt with very sh&rtly, an<l thai it might n*ver appear,-again, for he conteudad that the Synod was not the body to direct the nominators. Continuing, the J Blsbop ssud that without wholly endorsing j that opinion, and certainly without reflecting -upon the action of .the mover of tb<» resolution, he personally should be very sorry if either the resolution or the amendment were p&?s«d. (Hear, hear.) He was of opinion -ifa&fc these should not be withxirdwn. l>nt they .ought to "-be negatived by the House, and that because only by that means «ould the House show that it was satisfied xnHix ihe action of its notninatora. Upon the motion being put to the %nod, Mr Blackbame's motion was thrown out, «id Mr Bevan-Brown's amendment -was carried on the voice*. St. saviotju's guh-p. Mr E. Y. Cox moved a> resolution to the effect that -die Synod earnestly «mmends t&e work of St. Saviour's Guild, u»»' espeeieUy tb*fc past of jt wiudi is coaneeted I with St. Mary's Home and tie Female Refuge, to the sympathy and rapport of the clerpy and laity throughout the diocese. . Averfll moved a resolntion expressing sympathy vpth Mr &.. J. H. Herman in the cause which has brought eixmt bis temporary disablement. The resolution wae seconded bf Mr H. D.
