THE FEDERAL TARIFF.
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph-^Copyriglit. (Received October 19th, 9.41 a^m.) SYDNEY, October 19. Consternation has been caused in naval circles by the news that the Federal Tariff applies to warships. The opinion is expressed that this is an oversight. The Admiral has made representations to the Federal Government on the subject.
TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, October 19. A summary showing the revenue collected in Australia on. New Zealand produce during the year 1900 under the old tariff, and the amount that would be collectable on the same quantity under the new tariff, gives the following results:—N.S.W. old tariff £103, Federal tariff £165,254; Victoria. £82,820, £68,346; Queensland £9816, £12,394; South Australia £5104, £9105; Westralia £10,752, £19,813; Tasmania £2019, £2910. This would mean in the aggregate an increase f,rom £110,614 under the old to £277,822 under the new tariff. DUNEDIN, October 19. Mr Robert Gow, & member of a Liverpool firm, at present in Dunedin, is makincr inquiries with the object of making regular purchases of frozen mutton and lamb,' and of butter and cheese. Mr Gow states that New Zealand produce is steadily making its way , in Liverpool and that district, and that with millions in the Home Country anxious for New Zealand produce, the .colony can regard with equanimity the Federal tariff.
