SEQUEL TO AN AUCKLAND WEDDING.
A CHARGE OF WIFE DESERTION. United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 20th, 5.16 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 20. A sensational sequel to a marriage celebrated in Auckland a few weeks ago occurred yesterday. A young man named Alfred Adriad Pike was charged on a warrant with wife desertion, the charge being laid by his wife. He was ordered to pay fifteen shillings a week towards her support and find security totalling £80, in default six months' imprisonment. Pike declared he was unable to find the security and was removed to the cells, where he shortly afterwards shot himself with a revolver which he had somehow managed to secrete, inflicting a dangerous wound in his head. According to the story told by bis wife they were married in Auckland on. September 16th and left for Sydney in the Zealandia. Soon after their arrival her husband fcegan to illtreat her, and left her without funds. Being destitute and believing that he intended to leave for South Africa, she took out a warrant. Amongst Pike's effects were a number of discharges from American coastal vessels.
