A PECULIAR PROSECUTION.

A peculiar-position has arisen in the case of a bank clerk, named Cqnn, at LytteltoniConn was alleged to have, stolen £70, and the'bank'proceeded against him, but he went to South Africa in one of the Contingent*. The bank then withdrew- proceedings, but the police arrested the accusedW his return, and now. the Crown Prosecutor is pressing the charge, and the bank offi-cials-refuse togive evidence. The magistrate has made an order requiring the bank authorities to-produce their books. Meantime Conn ha* been liberated on bail: A remand to October 7th was granted. (fnxas ASSociXTioif thLegbxu.)'
