WELLINGTON, September 30. A decree nisi has been granted in the divorce case Florence Trask v George Trask. WANGANUI, September 30. At the Supreme Court to-day the Chief Justice congratulated the town on the smallness of the criminal calendar. True bills were found in all of the cases. McGinnity and Collier were found guilty of theft from a dwelling, <and were remanded till the morning. In the other cases tried to-day the accused pleaded guilty, and were remanded for-sentence. The Soler abduction case comes on for hearing on Thursday, and the Patea election case early nest week.
NEW PLYMOUTH, September 30. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the forthcoming Brass Band Contest to-night, the following prizes were fixed:—Test selection, first prize £100 and medals, second £50, third £25, fourth £15, fifth £10. Marching contest, four prizes. £20, £15, £10, and £5. The usual prizes were allotted for solos, trios, and Quartettes.
At the Police Court a fine of £10 or three •months' imprisonment was imposed on a. man named Harvey for supplying a prohibited person with drink. * . The first case of a breach of the Machinery Act was decided to-day, when a man holding a second-rtajs certificate was fined 5s ana ooste for driving an engine for which a first-class certificate was necessary. . The employer was fined similarly.;' DUNEDIN, September 30. !! The Judge sees no reason, to interfere with the jury's verdict ort grant a toew trial in the case of W. S.-Waterson, owner of the barque Ganymede against the National .Mortgage and Agency Company for a claim for £250 damages in connection with the voyage from N<rw Zealand to Capetown. , " .- In acknowledgment of the valuable and special services rendered to the city by Mr R. Chisholm during his sixteen months in office as Mayor, Mr Chisholm was -to-day presented with a massive silver tea aiuE .coffee service* and salver,,while an order has been given for a portrait of Mr Chisholm for the Town Hall. The money wats raised by public subscription in a few days.
