WHITEBAIT.

♦—:

TO THB EDITOB OF THE PR2SS. Sir,—ln reply to a letter in your columns signed "T. Davis," will you let mc show that gentleman the fraud that can be carried on in whitebait celling? Whitebait is sold by weight, but often when the -whitebait is measured out seaweed and other stuff is to be found among the whitebait, and the bag or sack is well dipped with water, while dried deposits in the pint pot, with which the whitebait is measured out, tend to make the measre less to .the buyer. The fact is, sir, if the dealers and h&wkers have to pay the same price as the shopkeepers, they have to resort to a measure with a false or a pint pot which would serve as a trophy of the South African war, so battered is it. I have seen whitebait on a Monday morning sold for Is per quart and less - , in such a state that a pie would turn up his nose at it. This wliitebait had been caugfbt on the Saturday, and left all day on Sunday exposed to a hot nor'-wester. If we had inspectors this might be remedied, but when they are wanted in the market they are not there. We have an Inspector of Weights and 'Measures who can find time to visit our hotels, and yet he cannot find time to visit the market to examine the scales and measures there. If he did, fee would (have many convictions during the week, end would prevent these frauds on the community.—Yours, etc., GEORGE BELL. St. Aeapb street East.
