THE RETURNING CONTINGENTS.
A HITCH IN THE ARRANGEMENTS. ROUGH WEATHER AT INVERCARGILL. (FSXSS ASSOCIATION TELKC-UAII.) INVERCARGILL, July 8. Matters in connection with the arrival of the Tagus are in a complete muddlement. With the weather now prevailing—sleet and snow squalls—it is possible the master of tl*e ship will not come through the straits, .and she may turn up off Otago Heads, on W-&d(n.esday. If so, it will be Thu|sday at tha earliest before the ebeamer gels back to the Bluff—perhaps too lata to land the men and.give them the reception that is being prepared for them. The weather tonight is vicious, consisting of steety snow and strong westerly winds.
(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") ' DUNEDIN, July 8. It appsars to be definitely accepted by the authorities now that the Tagus with the Fourth and Fifth Contingents on board left Albany bound for Port Chalmers, but the Premier has determined that faith shall be kept with the people of Invetcargill, and he has taken steps to have the men landed at the Bluff even if the steamer does not enter tltere. The following telegram from, the Premier to the Mayor will show what the Government are doing:—"l am doing my best to get the Tagus to go direct to the Bluff. If she does not I will intercept her at Dog Island with the Tutanekai and take the men off and land them at the Bluff." Whether such an undertaking can be carried out remains to be seen.
