NORFOLK ISLAND NOTES.
ftBOU Otfß CO&BBSPONDSNT.? NORFOLK ISLAND, June 10. Residence on Norfolk Island is pleasant at any part of the year, 'but during the months of March, April, and May, it is simply perfection —clear skies, bright sunshine and a temperature that can only be described as balmy, and the gardens are gay with roses and other lovely flowers. * " Bishop Wilson is having an addition made to his residence at St. Barnabas, which will add very much to its appearance, and also provide more accommodation.
A movement has been, set on foot to get from the Government a suitable piece of ground for a Victoria Memorial Park, in which it is intended to «rect an obelisk in memory of our late Queen. A gentleman arrived from New Zealand by the s.s. Mambare, on the 7th inst. I understand he intends leasing a piece of land* from the Government, and starting coffee planting, etc. We could do with a few more settlers of that sort.
We are expecting, at any hour, the arrival of the s.s. Britannia, as it is understood she left Brisbane about a fortnight ago, surveying a route for ths Pacific cable. The whaling season has now arrived, and an occasional whale is to be seen gambolling round the island, but no boats have as yet been out after them.
To-morrow is to be a great day with us, the annual gathering and' feasting, in commemoration of the first landing of the Piteairners on the island, also the great annual cricket match is to be played, the "Bounty" against the World.
