OUR POLICY OF ISOLATION.

ANSIS-ALLAN PRESS COMMENTS. "United Press Association—B. Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 4th, 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 4. The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" says th 6 report of the New Zealand Federal Commission confirms general expectations by reason of the remoteness of New Zealand, which would necessarily have had to surrender he** governing rights to a greater extent than has been required cf any of the Federal States. The "Sydney Morning Herald" says: — "We have heard before of the twelve hundred miles of sea being an insuperable barrier, but have not found it true that the thousands of miles which separate tbe capitals of the States of Australia are a barrier. It is of course true that the legislative independence of New Zealand would be affected by federatksi, but not more than the inde-pendence-'bf the udx colonies has been, affected. It is difficult to guess whstt were the grounds on which the commissioners founded their remarkable conclusion that the public credit of New Zealand would be diminished by federation.'' The "Herald" combats the argument that separate defence schemes would be as effective to repel invasion as a complete federal scheme, and goes on to say:—"Australia does not press New Zealand to enter, but before very long the colony will find that isolation has its disadvantage* as well as its advantages. Even legislative independence can be bought at too great a price."
