H.M.S. ST. GEORGE.
11.M.5. St. George is a first-class armoured cruiser, and is considerably larger than the Juno, displacing 7700 tons, and having the following measurement*:— Length, 360 ft; breadth,'6oft Bin ; and depth. 23ft 9in. She is fitted with a twin screw, and her engines develop 12.000 indicated horse-power, giving her a .maximum *poed of between 19 and 20 knots per hour. The St. Ueorge was built at Hull in 1892 at an estimated outlay of 377.204. Her belt of armour is 6in in thickness, and her deck in armoured to a depth of sin. Her armament comprises two 9.2 in and 10 6in quick-firing guns, 12 sixpoundei'ft, five tbree-nounders, and seven machine guns. Her bunkers cany 850 tons of roal, and her complement of officers and men is 558.
H.M. Cruisers St. George and Juno took their departure from Portsmouth on March 7th, catting at Portland next day, and arriving iit Gibraltar on tue 11th, wberfc they remained until the 15th. Thence they proceeded to Port Said, Suez, and Aden, the last-named port being arrived at on March 31st. I'hey remained, there until April sth, when they were joined the Ophir, all three vessel* leaving again for Colombo the same night. Thereafter during the reniitinder of the voyage the Royal yacht was in company with tho cruisers, excepting for a few hours before reaching and after leaving Albany. The St. George and the Juno are both finelooKing vessels, each having two masts and two funnels. The St. (ieorge is not unlike the Royal Arthur in general appearance, and might at first be easily mistaken for the flagship. The St. George was launched at Hull in 1893. She is under the command of Captain Paul Busch, and associated with him are the-following officers :—Commander A. Dutf, Chief Lieutenant Thorpe, Lieutenants Grant, Champain, Tronsdale, Ryan, Hanning-Leigh, SubLieutenant Hart, Staff-Surgeon Croplev. Surgeon Codrington, Staff-fcngineer Black, Kngimer Everett, Assistant Engineers Gay and Nelson, Paymaster Pritchard, Assistant Paymaster Mudge, (Jlerk Sheehy. There are nine midshipmen on the vessel.
