TEACHERS' SALARIES.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION. (PRESS ASSOCIATION- TELE-BAM.) WELLINGTON, February 6. A deputation from the Wellington Board of Education waited on the Minister of Education to-day with reference to the anomalies in the list of proposed increases of salary to teachers under the legislation of last session. Mr Blair, chairman of the Education Board, said the proposed increases were creating a great deal of dissatisfaction among teachers, and the Board as a whole complained of not having been consulted with regard to the increases, most of which appereu to be given to teachers with large salaries. The deputation contended that the intention of Parliament was to improve .the position of poorly-pa" d and junior teachers. The_Minister replied that as far as he knew Parliament merely wished to return to the teachers who had lost it fourteen years ago, the extra five shillings capitation, • and that there was no specific expression las to yvhich teachers were to receive mii creases. The Department had followed the j principle which the circumstances of most provincial districts demanded. Air Hogben, Inspector-General, stated that the increases had been given to those teachers yvho held the certificates required for their position, but no bonuses had been given for holding a higher certificate than necessary. It was decided that the Board should confer with its inspectors and revise the list with i. view to making suggestions.
