PENNY POSTAGE.
THE ATTITUDE OF AUSTRALIA. STRONGLY CRITICISED BY A MELBOURNE JOURNAL. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received January 20th, 5.1 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 20. The "Australasian" says: —''It is remarkable how tli3 dog-in-tlu munger policy commends itself to the 'official mind. The postal authorities are dead against letters coming to Australia from New Zealand under the penny rate. We incur no losfi by receiving such ktters, and there is no re <son bat one for the objection—that is, thM the authorities fear the sight of perm y ktters from New Zealand will contamiu nte or demoralise the Victorians, and caus , t them to lose faithjin the statements constantly mad-a by Victorian officials tha t penny postage must prove ruinous."
