NEWSPAPER CRITICISM.
(Received January 18th, 9.54 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 18. The Sydney "Morning Herald" says that while Mr Barton was not as definite as had been anticipated, he has made it clear that ho will submit a policy based on the lines of a moderate protective tariff. BRISBANE, January 18. The "Courier," in view of Mr Barton's remarks re a "White Australia," calls ijon Queensland to select the strongest Queenslander for the vacant portfolio. It regrets that Mr Philp is unable to join, as he would have shown Mr Barton where he was in error in regard to black labour. (Received January 18th, 10.56 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 18. The "Age" states that Mr Barton's policy is a staunch one, with a strong note of Liberalism and a sound one of Protection. The "Argus" characterises the references to the tariff as "Indefinite phrases," and concludes that tha tariff will be one of moderate Protection. (Mr Isaacs is to decide on Monday whether he will accept the State Premiership or enter the Federal Parliament.
