MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The meeting of the <__aterbury College Board of GovernoTS was held ymterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs H. R. Webb (c_ak___), R. Westenra, T. S. Weston, T. W. Adams, T. S. Foster, H. J. Beswick, C. S. Howard, T. Hughes, W. Chrystall, J. L. Soot., Dr. Nedwiil, the Rev. Dr. Morley, and Canon Harper. Mr G. 6. Stead -wrote, under date September 20tb, resigning his seat on the Board.
The Chairman, said he "was, personally, very sorry to receive this. As members knew, Mr Stead and he often differed, but Mr Stead was a man of such great business capacity and knowledge that it was a great pity for the Board to lose him; but he supposed there was not—ing for it but to accept his resignation. Mr West___ moved, "That Mr Stead's resignation be accepted with regret." _Cr Chrystall seconded the motion. Mr Weston expressed his regret that the occasion had arisen necessitating Mr Stead's resignation. Mr Chrystall asked the Chairman if he had seen Air Stead on the subject. The Chairman said he did not know if that was a proper question.
Mr Chrystall pointed out that ifc was usual for the Chairman to see a member who intended resigning. The Chairman said he could not say anything as they were in open Board, and would rather not say anything. The motion was agreed to, and the date of the election of a member to take Mr Stead's place was fixed for October loth, and the Registrar was appointed returning officer.
The College Committee recommended that the estimates for the Boys' High School for the year ending December 31st, 1901, be adopted ; the question of further reductions to be held over for consideration until the month of December. Also that the estimates for the Girls' High School for the same period be adopted. The Committee recommended that Mr O. T. J. Alpers be granted leave of absence on account of ill-health, and that Mr J. G. S. Cooper be engaged as a substitute at a salary of £4 per week. That the salary of biological laboratory assistant be increased to £65 per annum as from January Ist, 1901.
The Museum Committee reported recommending that the Committee "be authorised to instruct 'Messrs Collins and Harman to prepare and submit for approval plans for a new reading-room at the Public Library at an approximate cost of £4000; that the examiners of the School of Art should be awarded payment for their work; that the -sstimates for the year ending December 31sfc, 1901, for the "Museum and the School of Art be adopted. The Finance and Estates Committee recommended that in adda tion to £150 voted towards the erection of concrete culverts through the beach near Reserve No. 1183, South-ridge, a further sum of £29 3s 4d be voted for -extra cost incurred therewith. The Board went into committee to consider the reports of committees and the estimates. On resuming, the Chairman reported that the estimates and the reports had been adopted, with the exception of the recommendation of the Museum Comntittee with respect to the new reading-room at the Public Library, which had been postponed till the close of the session, and that the library estimates had been postponed. The Board then adjourned,
