THE LABOUR DEMONSTRATION.
At the meeting of the Labour Demonstration Committee, the entries were reported as under:—22o Yards Hurdle Race, 12 entries; Labour Day Demonstration Handicap, 27 entries; One Mile Walk, 10 entries. Tlie Executive reported as to the changing of the weekly half-holiday from Thursday to Wednesday, that they had seen several of the most important business people on the subject, and, from promises received they thought the holiday was assured. A telegram had been sent to the Premier on the subject, and the following reply had been received : —"Am advised that it is impossible to alter Labour Day for C__te-_ury, the same being gazetted' according to statute." Mr Lomas, the Factory Inspector, had authorised the Committee to state, that as Labour Day was a statutory holiday, shopkeepers closing on that day could keep open on the usual weekly half-holiday. The ballot for places in the procession "was arranged to. take place on Saturday next, at Inglis's Buildings, and it was decided to extend an invitation to all trade organisations outs'.do of those a-fli_ted to the Trades and J.abour Council, to take part"in the procession and demonstration.
