OTAGO v SOUTHLAND
(PSKSS ASSOCIATION TKLEGHAH.I DUNEDIN, September 15. The first and only representative football match was played to-day against Southland. The weather was glorious, out rather warm for football, and the attendance must have be«n about 6000. Otaco won by 17 points to nil. The Southlanuers held their own fairly well, but the backs were unable to take full advantage of the openings. Southland played with the breeze in the first spell, and after the kick off were attacking stroagly. The collaring of the local team was effective, and though the visitors appeared to have several chances, the only force down resulted near the end of the spall. Otago came away, and Wallace with a strong run was brought down within a couple of inches of the line. In the line out play which followed, Cross forced his way across and scored. The visitors in the first spell had held their own so well that a dose match was expected, but no sooner was play started than they were busy defending, awl Stephenson was only brought down within a foot of the line, From the line out Hobeon dropped over the/line, and Wallace failed with the kick. The kick out gave no relief to the - visitors, and from a passing rush Duncan scored, Wallace placing a fine goal. The visitors rallied for a time, and were in the Otago twenty-five, Purdue having a couple of tries at goal from a free kick, which were resultless. The Blues then became aggressive, and Adamson scored. Otago 14. "Southland nil. The visitors were again busy defending shortly after play started, and at length from a pass Stephenson forced his way over near the corner. No goal resulted, and the game ended Otago 17, Southland nil.
