POLICE COURT.
ALLEGED THEFT OF PIGEONS. On July 3rd, between 5.30 and 8.30, Mr Thomas * Richmond missed seven ' prize pigeons, value £4, from- his pigeon house, Collins street, Addington. A boy niuned Walter Howard, aged thirteen, had exchanged two of the pigeons for a birdcage *"_ tJ3 .another boy mimed George Granger. The birds were taken iron* a box in Howard's place. Granger afterwards sold them for 2s. Another boy, John Seafleld, had bought four of the pigeons from Howard, who said his father had bought them. Seafield had given a trap cage and 3d for one pair, and a goldfinch and 2s for the other pair. Detective Cassslis yesterday arrested Howard, who denied at first having taken the pigeons, but afterwards admitted that he took them in company with anotlier boy, Candy. The case was thereupon adjourned to secure the attendance of the boy Candy. When the boy Candy apt*eared he denied having anything to do with the affair. Two other boys gave evidence to the effect that Candy had said he was going to take the pigeons, and thai they saw Candy and Howard in com- *? pan S? in S ■ for -h© pigeons. The Bench fined Howard £1, saying that the boy Candy was eqaaliy to blame.—Cindy; was thereupon charged. With the same offence. Walter Howard gave evidence to the effect that Candy invited him to accompany him to Richmond's place to steal some j pigeom*. Howard refused at first, but con-1 sented to do so afterwards, and they went. ' Candy had a feed bag frith hhn, and into this was placed six pigeons. Howard took charge of. the birds in the -meantime. The evidence was so contradictory that the Bench dismissed the case. FAST DRIVING. Wtliam . Morris, a cabman, who, on August 23rd. drove his cart at a fast pace across the intersection of Lichfield, Manchester and High streets, was fined 10a vesrcidav by Messrs Prudhoe. ALLEGED THEFT OF A CHEQUE, On September sth, Philip _\ T ieholl«, jjj old man living at Belfast, missed a c_ea-_ for £9 lis 6d from his bedroom. He ___ missed a man named George Duffey, vr| lt had been staying with him at intervals _>-_■ some time. Only these two lived in tit* house, and Duffey was present when tie cheque was given to Nicholls by Mr Tisc.' the drawer of the cheque, and" saw -*rh* K ' the cheque was placet!. The cheque «•-, presented at the Bank of Australasia cj September sth, and cashed by the aocuiejThe accused was arrested the next <!«- and stated that the cheque was for wag-*! The accused, who reserved his defence, wa committed for trial at the next criminal session of the Supreme Court.
