BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SYDENHAM.

An ordinary meeting of the Council ■ was held yesterday evening. Present—Mr Manhire (Mayor), and Crs. Taylor, Jacques, Smith, Meikleham, Johnstcn, ' Jones, Brown, Forrester, Williams, McMeekan, Sim and Hammett. petition was received from a number of residents, drawing attention to the bad state of the footpaths in the new portion of Burke street. It was decided to put the work in hand as qisickly as possible. A letter was read from the League of N.Z. Wheelmen, complaining of the rough state of the road leading from the Ferry road to Lancaster Park. It was decided to take steps to put the road in better order. The Works and Sanitary Committee reported that all the owners of * land from the angle o'l the Recreation Reserve at Dewsbury'e corner to Mr Heard's property had agreed to ,give a strip of laud sft wide for the purpose of widening Jerrold street, subject to the Council paying all expenses in connection therewith. The Committee recommended that all the offers be accepted. The Committee had given instructions for the abatement of the nuisance in the old pit in Gibbon street. The Committee recommended that the Government be asked what it had done, or was doing, to carry out its proposal to inspect dairies as indicated in its circular of March 27th, 1899. The Committee recommended that tenders be invited for the further lease for seven years of R.S. 30494, now occupied by <Mr George Murdock. The report was adopted.

The Finance Committee reported that during, the last fortnight the receipts of the Couucil h|4 bieen:—General account £359 9a 7d, 'ippgpsip account ,£lj|.';3s, separate accounts Ml 8a 10d; total Receipts, £394 Is sd. -.The-expenditure account £283 183, loan account £6 12s lid, separate account £2; total expenditure £297 103 lid. The report ~<we»- adopted' and accounts to the amount-of £288 18* were passed ior payment. Tie balance* of the different accounts were:—Separate trusts account (cr.) £118 13s lid, interest account (cr.) £685 18s Bd, loan account (cr.) £4417 4s 4d. The general account was £2979 17b in debit.

Cr. McMeekan gave notice of motion — "That $feie Council write to the varkra*

clubs playing in the Sydenham Park asking them if they are prepared to co-operate iv providing a permanent caretaker.' Or. Jones gave notice of motion—"That the Works Committee be instructed to have plans of the Sydenham Park prepared showing the intended alterations and improvements, together with the, spaces to be allotted to each game." The Council adjourned at 10 p.m.
