MAJOR CRADOCK TAKES COMMAND. (rUKSS ASSOCIATION TKUEGBAU.) WELLINGTON, December 28. Major Cradock 'has taken over the charge of the men. The Contingent will be divided as before into two companies, representing the North and Sootah Island. Captain Haybnrst; ofTemuka, is spoken of as. likely to command the No. 2 company, with Lieutenants Hettsan and Findlay as subordinates. Captain Alexander is mentioned as commander of No. 1 company, with Lieutenants Sommerville and Banks, ! but none of these appointments are actually •settled.' The rule against taking married men will not be applied to officers. [Major Cradock has (says the "Post") seen active service in Afghanistan with his regiment, the 6th Dragoon Guards, his commission dating from October, 1887. He was with the Ivhyber Division of the Kaibul Field Force, in the expedition against Asma•toola -Khan in the. Lughman Valley, and afcso in the expedition against the Wuzeeri Khugtanis, and is tie possessor of the Afghan medal. Captain Cradock came out to New Zealand a few years ago to assume the management of the Progress group of gold mines on the southern West Coast, and continued. resident on the Coast until he volunteered for active service with our Contingent.] ■' ■ './ ""
