A BUSY DAY'S WORK,

Yesterday waa a record so far in th" matter of additions to our list, which to use Mr Sam Weller's expression, is "swellin wisibly." The clerks in the pubUsbinj* office of "The Press", had a busy time, During a great part of the day they found it impossible to get on with their ordinary work, but they cheerfully recognised they were adding a good cause, and announced their intention of coming back at night, il necessary, to overtake arrears. To use a flow historic expression, they had put theiz hands to the plough and did not intend \a turn back. Frequently yesterday ''The Press" office was filled with visitors, three or- four lines deep, waiting to pay in their shillings, and add their namee to the list. They were of all classes, including a goodly number of working men and women, Even the children are moved, and not ft- few of our shillings come from the money boxes of the youngsters, which even after tihe strain of Christmas, still seem able to yield something. It was all a striking illustration of the depth of the popular feeling as to the necessity of New Zealand doing her duty in the crisis which has arisen. A question raised By a correspondent in a letter which we pubHj*-}-. belo**-, is one that has frequently met us. Many people feel so strongly on tliis question that they cannot content thenaaelve* witib simply a shilling subscription. One gentleman yesterday insisted on giving ten guineas. Needless to stay, we do not refuse the larger amounts, but-what we chiefly aim at is a bona fide expression of opinion from all classes of the community. For thi-s reason we are particularly anxious that subscribers should sign their full names, "and not simply initial I or pseudonyms. We had another reason for fixigg the shilling subscription, namely, in ordejr to make it a democratic affair, in the widest sense of tlie word* Many who are not able to afford large sums, feel just as strongly on this subject as the donors of handsome subscriptions, and are glad of some method of showing their sympathy with the Mother Country, and a desire to strengthen the hands of our own Government to tlie matter of sending another Contingent. The "More Men" Fund enables them to do this. It will be seen that this morning the total acknowledged amounts to 1887$ shillings. This includes only a portion of the lists distributed both in town and country. We would again remind our friends to send us in their prog-resß reports to-day, ao that we may print a goodly list of names tomorrow, . _ . , Shillings Amount previously acknowledged „. 813 Received at "Press" Office (third list)— Alfred Clark Is, Jane E.
