I ■_','* , * ti> i, ■ j. The Selwyh. Council met yesterday. PreI sent—Messrs' R. Westctuu - (chairman),' 6, Rutherford, J. Wolfe, G. H. McHsffie, J. Gough, J.-Ronnie, and.W. Dunlop. An apology was received for the absence, through illness, of Mr J. G.. Murray. A motion by Messrs Gough and Wolfe to reduce 'to 5 "per cent, the interest on the money provided fo_\the erection of statutes at tlie Bealey was rejected. Messrs Westenra and McHaffie presented the report of the iTramway Committee, waicu -was adopted. The Sub-Committee appointed to inspect tlie river Halswell reconiinended that 'it would be inadvisable to draw the trees as too expensive, but suggested that the trees should ba cut down and the stumps salted. As the-timber would be worth the cutting, residents near tlie river were to have first ofier of removing the trees, receiving the timber by way of remuneration. The report was adopted. The Slaughterhouse Inspector's report, which .was of a satisfactory character, was approved. "The Malvern Road Board interviewed the Council, and asked for the contribution of £600 towards the cost of a bridge over the Kowai, the Government having promised a similar amount. It was decided that however much the Council wished to assist, it did not regard the work as a county work, and had no funds at its disposal. No. 1 contract for clearing the river. Halswell was*- let on tender to. Jas.- Griffiths for three years _tt £120 a year; and No. 2 contract to W.*J-_wis for -CWO * or tn " !e yea*£ . A letter was read from the Chri-rtchurch Branch of the Liberal, and Labour Federation, forwarding a copy of a' resolution passed .expressing the opinion that it was necessary that public abattoirs should be established. . It was decided to reply that the Council was doing its best to bring about the establishment of abattoirs. A copy of the petition for the borough of Riccarton was received. The Halswell Road Board was granted £150 for the maintenance of the Lincoln road. A letter from the Auditor-General, returning the audited balance-sheet, and a circular from the Government with reference to the celebration of Arbor Day, were received. Plans of the proposed bridge over the canal at Lake Ellesmere were considered, and it was decided to call for tenders for the work. The Courtenay, Rakaia, Riccarton, and Lake Ellesmere Road Boards wrote applying for bonuses, as promii-ed, for the destruction of small birds, and the applications were granted. It was decided to inform the Government that the Council had no objection to the alteration of boundaries, faansferring certain properties from the Avon to the Eyreton road district. Several other letters were dealt with and accounts passed, and the Council adjourned untiMo.3o a-m. nest Wednesday.
