TRAMWAY CONCESSIONS.

—» The Sub-Committee of the Selwyn Council presented the following recommendation which it had arrived at on the question of tramway concessions, which was adopted, the Chairman also explaining that under any circumstances he expected the subject would go to arbitration: —(1) That the term should be 21 years; (2) that the Tramway Companv be required to keep the road in order as sat the present time; (6) that a fair rental be charged for the right to. run the tramway along the road, and that such rental be divided timong the» local authorities on a mileage basis; (4) that the local authorities have the option of purchasing (or of transferring their right of purcnase" to any ether local authority) at a valuation, at the expiration of 10 years. With regard to rental, the Committee personally kre opposed to charging any'rental, seeing that any such rental must be paid! by the travelling public, but in deference to the Avon Eoad Board, who are the interested parties, we have agreed to recommend tnat a, fsdr rent be charged. If a rental be decided upon it should be set aside to form, a fund for the purchase of the line. If these suggestions are not acceptable to the Tramway Company, the matter be referred to arbitration.
