THE VOLUNTEERS.
During the week the corps in camp at Elmwood have l>een instructed in company drill. Last night they were put through battalion movements in view of the inspection by Colonel Pole Penton, which takes place at seven o'clock this evening. The annual volley and independent firing of the College Rifles took place at Bromley on Tuesday. There were fifty-four present, of whom forty-seven fired, Lieutenant Smith being in charge. Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon and Staff-Sergeant-Major Barrett were on the range. In the volley firing the total points scored were 577, and the figures of merit obtained was 12.27. In independent firing the total points were 724. and the average 15.40. The Kaiapoi and City Rifles do their tiring on Saturday.
The North Canterbury battalion will attend Divine service in their camp at Elmwood on >unday morning next, when the offertory will go towards the relief of an invalided officer of the old Ist Canterbury Rifle Battalion.
