NORTH CANTERBURY INFANTRY BATTALION CAMP.

There was a muster of the public to see the battalion off to their camping ground at Elmwood on Saturday night, despite the fae'-i that the paiade ■was called so late as 10.30. Tho battalion, headed by the "Cycle , Corps, marched to the camp at Elmwood via Cambridge Terrace, Victoria street, and Papanui road, arriving in camp at 11.30. The tents had been already pitched by a fatigue party, and Lieutenant Sandford, the j battalion, quartermaster, had everything ready for, the troops on their arrival. The camp is situated to the rear of Elmwood grounds, and is a portion, of the Elmwood estate. It is an ideal camping ground, there being plenty of room for battalion movements, as well as outpost work. The march-ing-m states were: Cycle Corps (Lieutenants' Finnis and Hunt) 16, City Guards (Captain Cresswcll and Lieutenant Bishop) 40, Christ's College Rifles (Lieutenants Smith and Merton) 29, Christchurch City Rifles {Captain Fairbairn, .Lieutenants Louisson and Webb) 40, Imoerial Rifles (Captain Cbarlewood, Li&utenaraits Marciel and Holderneas) 38, Svden'hom Rifles (Captain ...Smith, Lieutenants. ; Miller and Hall) ,52, Xihwpod Rifles (Captain Horsley, Lieutenants Drayton and Johnson) 55. Staff, 6 —total, 276. Lieutenant-Colonel Francis, V.D. is in command, and has with him Major Day and Adjutant Hobday, Lieutenant Sandford is quartermaster,, while the Battalion Staff Non-comnrlssioned officers are Sergea,mt;-Mla,jor Foster and Quartermas-ter-Sergeant Gulliver. Colour-Sergeant Turner, of the Wellington College Rifles, is also in camp, and is attached to the staff. On Sunday morning, after the lines had been cleared up, the men were mustered for church parade, the service being conducted by his .Lordship the Bishop, tne Garrison Band, under - Sergeant Gibbs, playing the accompaniment to the hymns-in an excellent manner. His Lordship preached a most impressive sermon on discipline, taking 'as his text Hebrews v., Bth verse. The offertory was in aid of Captain Bristow, of the old Christchurch Rifles, who is at present lying eenouslv ill in the Akaroa Hospital. Ihe following is the routine for the camp: Reveille 4.45, rations 5.15, breakfast 6 30, tea 6.30 p.m., guard mounting 8, first post y.60, last pest 10, lights out 10.30 The first guard was provided by the City Guards The orders for Sunday were: Officer of the day, Laptam Fair-baiim; next for duty Captain CharZewood; subaltern of the day' Lieutenant Hall; next for duty, Lieutenant i Hunt, Colour-Sergeant Turner, of the Wei- ! hngton College Rifles, being attached to the battalion, and appointed acting quartermas,«r sergeant.
