A LONDON BISHOP'S CONFIDENCES.

Tho Bishop of Stepney, preaching at Shoreditch one Sunday recently, was more than usually communicative. Contrary to th© usual toho of distress heard from the clergy, he acknowledged that while he was a Bethnal-green vicar h© found his £150 a year fully enough for his needs; and as bishop his increased income he makes do, and never has to worry how to make both ends meet. On this pag he hung a telling homily on thrift and tempsrance* Then,*- touching on' the efficacy of prayer, he related three personal experiences of direct answer to prayer —in the same way as Muller, of Bristol. When contemplating the building of Oxford House Settlement, and in sore difficulty over funds, he prayed about the matter. Quite unexpectedly a gentleman drove up to the door of Oxford House and offered him £3000 of the £15,000 wanted. Another time he wanted £1000 for the laying-out of old Beth-nal-green churchyard, and made it the subject of special prayer. Soon after a strange lady called and gave him the £1000. The third occasion a churchwarden had become liable for £100, and they did net know how they could possibly get out of the difficulty After he had preached at St. Paul's Cathedral on "Pain,' a gentleman sent up a note saying ho was so pleased with the discourse that he enclosed a cheque for £100 for the Bishop to spend as he pleased. He regarded all these as direct and distinct answers to prayer.
