MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.

♦ The promoters of tho Lyttelton Catholic picnic, in consequence of the inclemency of the weather yesterday morning, abandoned their intended excursion to Rhodes Bay by the John Andersen. They engaged the local Oddfellows' Hall, and there the children and holiday makers enjoyed themselves in-such a hearty manner as apparently quite compensated for the loss of the sea trip. Father Salvador and several priests • from Christchurch were present and did much to enhance the pleasure of one and all. At the general meeting of the Women's Christian, Temperance Union on Wednesday hut, Misa Roberts, superintendent of scientific temperance work, reported that daring last year she had delivered twenty lecturettes to Band of Hope Societies 111 Chri-tchurcli and suburbs, including Chuich of England, Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational. The following resolution was carried :— "This Union sympathises with the Christian Endeavour Society in its efforts to suppress unnecessary traffic on Sunday, and empowers Miss Roberts to correspond with the Society, to enquire what steps it would b© best-to take."
