ASHBURTON.

The Ashburton Borough Council met on Monday evening. Present—The Mayor, Cra. W. H. Collins, E. W. Hanmer, J. Maynard. J. Orr, E. J. Paul, J. Sealey, J. Pauling, D Thomas. An apology was received for the'abseuce of Cr. Davis. Prior to the ordinary business being proceeded with considerable time was wasted in personal explanations in reference to the last meeting lapsing for the want of a quorum. The Mayor then stated tho debit balance at the bank to be £1389 7s 7d. A letter was received from the Treasury Department advising the payment of £141 12s 4d as the Council's subsidy. Mr T. Bullock waited on the Council with reference to alterations and improvements he contemplated making to buildings in Burnett street. The matter was referred to the engineer and the Works Committee. Solicitor's opinions were read with reference to an application from Mr H. F. Nicoll to have an auctioneer's license transferred from himself to Mr J. R. Bland. The advice was that the transfer could not be made. The committee, who had visited the Hinds reserve, recommended the reduction of the rent to 6s 6d per acre. The report was adopted. Permission was granted tho employees of the Woolston tanneries to hold a picnic in the domain on Saturday next.
