PREYING FLIES.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TRESS. Sir, —In your Friday's issue you published a letter from "Z.Z." on "Preying Lisects." Some time ago, on the banks of the Selwyn. I saw a fly of an orange colour, and aboutJin long, making off with a large spider, in the sams way as described by "Z.Z." Probably the fly was of the same species as he saw.* The spider seemed to be ditad. but I took hold of it and found that it was still alive, though very "limp."' On my putting it down, the fly came back and carried it off over the long grass, in a very businesslike way. It was, as your correspondent observes, a prodigious feat for the fly. for the spider must- have been two or three times its weight. I did not see it- attack the spider, but perhaps some of your readers who have seen the ichenmon attack spiders could give a description. It would be interesting to know. —Yours, &c, W.H.W.
