AN ELEPHANTS MEAL.

Prior to the departure of Hannston's Circus from Palmerston North (says the Manawatu Standard") the elephant "Babe" was chained to a telegraph post close to the footpath. The morning air evidently had a sharpening effect upon its appetite, for the first foot passenger who came by was bailed up, and prevented from passing until he had paid tribute by giving 'Babe" something to eat. Not having anything edible in his pockets, the wayfarer attempted to force his passage, when the elephant, not to be outdone, reached out his trunk and caught hold di the coat sleeve, and the man, fearing that he was about to be swallowed bodily, slipped out of his garment, which to his dismay he saw slowly disappear through the "jaws of death" and down the elephant's throat, and but for the timely assistance of one of the circus boys, who compelled the animal to disgorge, the coat would never have been worn again.
