BRANDING FROZEN MEAT.
TO THE EDITOR OK THE PRESS.
Sir,—Being a constant reader of your jvour valuable paper, and one who takes-'an interest;* in frozen meat generally, I cannot refrain from in addressing these few lines to l you and Canterbury farmers. I think it is high time that 'something is 'done to brand or; mark our Canterbury mutton, so that it may be -thoroughly'known as prime by the British consumers. Sir, after reading the remarks of Mr T. H. Evans, of Balcairn, who has put'the facts -us !so plainly, there cannot be any doubt that something musi be doile in the way of meat marking, and, as there are ,-everal meat brands before the public now, I would suggest that a* trial shipment should be sent Home, branded with such'a brand as shown one day last-week, called the spinal s brand, for-.iriarking mutton and lambs,' which brands the spinal cord of the' sheep from neck to, tail, .and cannot be seen until the-mutton-is cut up. A capital process this is, and if once known by the English consumers it would put things on a very different footing at Home.—-Yours, &c , _ a 1 PROTECTION. Lyttelton, December 7th.
