NOTES AND MEMORANDA.
The date of the next Canterbury Ram Fair has been fixed for March 16th and 17th next, and the Finance and Ram Fair Committees of tho Canterbury -A. and IV Association have been instructed to report upon the question of fees, a reduction having been urged at the annual meeting of the Association.
The acreage of Mr S. Garforth's farm at Hilton, sold to Mr Heathcote Gray, is 868 acres.
The Christchurch Bowling Club will meet at Warner's Hotel to-night at eight o'clock, when matters with reference to the approaching tournament will be di_cus?cd. The Rose Show will open to-day in the Art Gallery, when it is expected teat there will be a good display oi blooms of the Queen of flowers. The judging of the table decoration- will be by a plebiscite of the visitors to the show. The show will open at 1 p.m., and there wiU be afternoon tea provided, and music in the evening. An address will be given by Air D. D. Hyde, poultry expert, at the Christchurch Poultry Club rooms, on Monday, December 12th, at 8 n.m. All interested are invited to attend. "There will be no charge for admission.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Canterbury Ledge, 1048, E.C., wiU be held in the Masonic Hall to-night, at 7.30. The catalogue for the next wool sale will close on Monday, December 12th. With this issue of the "Press" is given, a supplement containing the particulars of the Christmas sale at Victoria House, which commences to-day, and continues up to December 31st. The supplement gives the details of the great reductions which have bec-Ji made in tne various departments. of the firm, including every conceivable article in dress goods, blouses, mantles, lace goods, muslins, straw nats,' millinery, &c.
The iormal opening of the new pumpers in connection with the Christchurch Gas Works will take place this afternoon, at two o'clock.
The ordinary meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held to-day, at 2.30 p.m.
The Christmas and New Year holiday excursions on the Hurunui-Bluff railways open on the 19th inst., on which day up to and including the 3rd January tickets at reduced rates will be issued available for return up to and including 31st January. Special night trains leave Christchurch and Dunedin on the 24th and 31st insts. The trains from Ghristchurch leave at 10.40 p.m., and those from Dunedin arrive on the 25th inst. and Ist January at 8.55 a.m. . From the number to hand the entry for the Pioneer Bicycle Club's big handicap on Boxing Day bids fair to be a record one. The Committee are making complete arrangements to ensure a most successful meeting, and one important circumstance they intend insisting upon is to be the quick despatch of the events. The arrangements for the E Battery concert on the 19th inst .are well in hand. The programme is an attractive one, including military songs by leading Christchurch artists, tableaux of scenes from the Soudan war, Highland music and dances, and military exhibitions of various kinds.
