FLORAL FETE.
A meeting convened in connection with the proposed floral fete this year, was held last night in, the City Council Chambers. There was a very large attendance of ladies and gentlemen. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. In addition,to-the members of the old Committee, representatives of the various boating clubs were also present.
The Mayor said they would all remember how, last year, after months of praying for rain, it came most inopportunely. Despite this untoward state of things, a balance of some £40 remained in hand, which had been deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank, and was now available. He understood that there was a proposal to devote the money •wliich might be raised from the Floral Fete this year towards the fund for improving the river Avon, which they would all agree with was a very laudable object. Apologies were received from Messrs Baker, Kirk, Murphy, and Cockayne. Mr Capper moved—"That a Floral Fete be held this year." He was glad to see that the public of .Canterbury, were taking an interest ;in the river, and if.it was decided to carry out the scheme proposed, last year, then there . was no .doubt the river would be permanently improved.. But he would not be a party to doing anything that would lift the responsibility from the Drainage Board, or merely result' in a temporary improvement. Cr. Woods seconded the motion, which was agreed to after some .discussion. Mr Hart moved—"That those present form themselves into a general committee, with power to add to tneir number." Mr Hancock seconded the motion, which j was agreed to. Mr Haskins was elected as treasurer, Mr Blake as secretary and Mr C. Hull as as- j sistant secretary. The Ladies' Committee and the Executive Committee were appointed "as last year, with addition of Messrs F. I. Cowlishaw, F. Fuller, and F. Crosbie, as representing the boating clubs. Power. was given to the committees to add to their number.
*Mr Capper then moved—"That the Floral Fete be held on Anniversary Day." Mr T. Clarkson seconded the motion pro forma.
Some discussion ensued, in which Cr. Woods, Messrs Hancock, Capper, Anstey, and Hart took part. Mr Hancock moved as an amendment— "That the Executive Committee be instructed to select the date of a Thursday upon which the Floral Fete shall be held." Mr Hart seconded the amendment, which was canied.
Mr Hart moved—"That the proceeds of the Floral Fete be devoted towards the improvement of the River Avon."
Mr C. Hull seconded the motion. Mr N. L. Macbeth spoke strongly in favour of the improvement of the river as the finest asset the city possessed. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to his Worship the Mayor was carried by acclamation, and the meeting adjourned.
