COWHIDING AND SHOOTING.
AN EXCITING EPISODE.

Mr Meagher, a member of the Legislative Assembly, grieved afe some comments in "Truth" newspaper, waylaid Mr Norton, the editor and proprietor, in Pitt street, and cowhided him. The thoroughfare was crowded at the time. Mr Norton drew a revolver, whereupon Mr Meagher made off, and an interesting race eventuated. Norton, dodging the crowd and watching his opportunity, fired at Mi Meagher, but missed him. A number of people hindered Norton's movements and Mea-gher escaped. Norton was arrested and remanded. He was bailed out and immediately itrfued a warrant for the arrest of Meagher, who surrendered.himself and was also bailed.
