KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present, the Mayor (Mr Wilson), Crs. Feldwick, Hopkins; Bugg, Hayman, Eagle, Daly, Knight, Pearce, and Doubleday. A letter was read from Lands Department, forwarding reasons giren by the local boards for refusing to contribute to the Kaiapoi traffic bridge. It was stated by the Mayor that the principal reasons were on erroneous premises, and it was decided that the Council's reply be considered at next meeting. The Mayor reported; recommending that future registrations for meetings should be signed by one seventh, pr at least fifty burgesses, which was adopted. Mr Henry met the Council respecting the lease of a part of Darnley square for three years. The matter was i referred to the Works Committee to report, j The Finance Committee reported: receipts, £10 15s 3d, and the present overdraft £734 2s 6d. Accounts amounting to £45 0s Id were passed for payment. The following committees were elected :—Works, Cr. Feldwick (Chairman), Doubleday, and Pearce; Finance and Cheques, Cγ. "Hayman(Chairman), Daly, and Knight; Cemetery, Crs. Bugg (Chairman), Hopkins, and Daly; Lighting and Fire Prevention, Crs. Hopkins (Chairman), Bugg, and Doubleday; Sanitary Crs. Eagle (Chairman), Hayman and Knight. The Mayor referred to the improved appearance of the public cemetery, and the need

for forming the main path. Referred toth* Cemetery Committee to report. Cr. Knight moved, and Cr. Hopkins seconded, "That the attention of the police be drawri"to"tL"«v reckless driving of traction engines through the town." Carried. It was decided that Walker street be repaired, and the cost sent to Messrs Anderson and Son. The Council, in committee, considered an offer to renew the lease of the Endowment reserve, and decided to decline the same, as it* was intended to submit it to public tender, when all offers would be considered on their merits. The Council then adjourned.
