The Supreme Court sittings opened today before Mr Justice Pennefather, who was welcomed by the Bar. His Honour regretted that on his first visit the calendar was so long and the oflfence3 so heinous. Alexander McLean, aged twenty-one, pleaded guilty to three charges of theft, and was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. Robert Cameron McKenzie, aged thirty-two years, on five charges of false pretences, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment on each, to run concurrently. George John Baxter, aged sixty-six years, pleaded guilty to false pretences, and wa» sentenced to six months. Frederick John Thomson, aged fourteen years, who was employed at the Post Office, pleaded guilty to stealing moneys from letters, and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. Edward Littlebund, alias Glover, on a charge of forging and uttering pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. Emily Rolfe admitted a charge of concealment of birth, and his Honour deferred sentencing her till the morning. The Court was occupied this afternoon with hearing the charge preferred against Patrick Cosgrove, Arrow town, of indecently assaulting a girl, aged seventeen years, the' Grand Jury having thrown ont the count charging him with attempted rape. The proceedings were greatly delayed by the extreme deafness of the prosecutrix, and the case had not concluded when the Court rose for the day.
