CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Canterbury Children's Aid Society was held on Thursday night, when the sub committee presented the prospectus which it had drawn up for distribution amongst the public. The prospectus was considered in detail and amended, and ifc was decided to print and circulate it immediately. It was further decided that the society should start active operations as soon as the sum of £100 had been subscribed. The prospectus states that the society is formed for the purpose of ameliorating the condition of destitute and neglected children by the more stringent enforcement of the present laws dealing with children; by the introduction of such new legislation as is for the rescue of children from undesirable homes; by the relief of, and care for, actual cases of destitution ; by organising, when practicable, free kindergarten schools for children under the compulsory school age, and creches; and by endeavouring to organise existing methods of relief, so as to prevent the present prevalence of indiscriminate .charity, and the'practice of begging by children sent out for that purpose. The urgent need of classification in existing industrial homes is mentioned. This society requests that the public will become members and assist by donations of money and clothing. Clothing may be sent, for the present, to the house of Mr Blank, truant inspector, Fitzgerald street, off North-east belt. The terms of membership are—for working members, 2s 6d per annum; for honorary members 10s per annum.
