At the opening of an Orange Lodge in the Druids' Hall, Hornby, the Grand Lodge oJheer3 were present in person. R.W.D.G.M. Bro. Mangin presided, and installed the following officers—W.M., Bro. \V. Kennedy ; D.M., Bro. A. H. Woodall; secretary, Bro. T. Coulter ; treasurer, Bro. Wni. Johnston ; chaplain, Bro. \V. H. Shepherd. Five candidates received the Orange decree, f.D.M. Bro. Hanna ana VV.M. Bro. Kinninmonth acting as deacons, and three candidates were proposed for membership. Heller's Mahatma Company drew a crowded house last night at the Oddfellows 5 Hall, Lyttelton. The programme met with enthusiastic approval. The company is to againappear to-night, when there will be a change of programme. The annual social in connection with the Temuka Fire Brigade was held in the drillshed, Temuka, on Thursday evening, and was highly successful. Mr E. Cullen, chairman of the Town Board, presented long service bars to Captain Henry, fourteen years; Lieutenant McS. Gentlemun, twenty-four years; Foreman Anderson, seven years ; Fireman Davey, sixteen years : C. Clinch, eight years. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the League of the Cross : President, Rev. Bro. Arthur (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs M. Findlay, J. Canavan and J. Ormandy ; secretary, D. Edmonds ; treasurer, J. Giffen; councillors, R. f Barry, M. O'Rielley and J. Shanly. The highest scores in the Rangiora Morris Tube Club's first competition for Mr Hay's trophy on Thursday night were:— R. Efford, 34 ; F. Baker, J. Fraser, 33 : F. Gulliver, E. D'Auvererne, H. Gulliver, 32; W. Eflord, jun., B. D'Auverctne, 31; C. Fraser, W. Ellbrd, sen., R. E. Reeve, 30.
The monthly social and dance of the Estudiantina (Jlub was held in St. John's schoolroom on Thursday evening when over eighty members and their hiends were present. Dancing was kept up till midnight, and during the evening songs were given by Miss Lilian Thompson, Messrs Collier and Read, a recitation by Mr Ryan, and instrumental selections by Messrs Post, Adams and Nashelski, and the Estudiantina Band. Mies Webley presided at the piano, and Mr R. Laurie made an efficient M.C. The Christchurch Prohibition League held a social in the W.O.T.U. rooms last night, when thete was a very large attendance. Mr T. E. Taylor presided. Addresses were given by the chairman and Mrs Newton, and the following contributed vocal and other items:- Messrs Salter, McCulloch, Joll, Squires and Pegg, and Mr Lightbody gave some selections on the gramophone. The Tai Tapu contingent of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles held their second annual social on Thursday eveningin theD: uids'Hall, Lincoln, when there was a very large attendance, eighty-five couples taking part in the "Grand March," among them a number of visitors from Christchurch. Very full arrangements had been made by the committee, consisting of Sergeant Macartney, Corporals Wheeler and Gilmour, FarrierSergeant Miller, and Trooper Johnston, Sergeaut Macartney filling the position of secretary. The hall looked very pretty, and the floor was in excellent condition, while the music, in the hands of Mr Doherty, was all that could be desired. Among those assembled there were in addition to the members of the Tai Tapu and Templcton contingents, representatives of the E Battery, Rifles and N Battery, as also the Chi istchuich contingent of the Mounted Rifles. Mi- P. Miller filled the position of M.C, and the catering was in the hands of Trooper F, W. Johnston. During the evening Sergeant Colclough sang a military song, and the dance wa3 kept up with vigour till 2.30 a.m.
On Thursday evening a return card match was played between Messrs Heywood's employees and the Primrose Club, which resulted in a win for the former by thirtyeight games to thirty. , The ninth match, first round, in connection with the card tournament at Lyttelton resulted as follows:—Permanent Artillery beat Young Men's Clnbß team by 14 games, Fiie Brigade beat Railway by 8 games, Oddfellows beat Druids by 8 games, Young Men's Club A team beat Navals by 2 games, N Battery and Buffaloes a draw.
There was a crowded attendance* at the social tea and entertainment in connection with St. Barnabas's Church at Woodend on Wednesday night. The Rev. H. H. Mathias presided. Miss Ivy Shilton and Miss Kate Tinkler gave a pianoforte duet. Songs were given by Misses May Jury, Eva Jury, Land, Pearce, Balcb, Hansman, Matthews and Jacques, and Messrs W. Pearce, Arinitage, Templeton (encored), T. Horrell, Acton and Master vVinsloe. Recitations by Master J. Norman and Miss Balch, a piano solo by Miss B. Horrell, and a piano duet by Misses Ivy Shilton and Kate Tinkler. Miss Pemberton played violin selections. Mr F. Horrell was presented with two handsome church service books' bound in morocco leather, from the choir. He has been connected with the church for the last thirty years, and most of that time acted as organist. The proceeds of the entertainment are to be devoted to the painting of the church.
