ENTERTAINMENTS, MEETINGS, &c.
The quarterly meeting of the Greendale Primitive Methodist Church was held on Monday afternoon. The finances were most satisfactory, showing income to be in excess of expenditure. The usual quarterly tea was very largely attended. At the public meeting which followed the church was crowded. The gathering took the form of a farewell to Mr and Sirs Uy. Holland and Mr Wm. Holland, who are removing to Ciirintohurch, Messrs Holland having purchased Mr McLaren's traction engine business. Mr Hy. Holland has ior a considerable time filled the offices of local preacher, trustee, and Bible class toucher, and has also been a prominent lemjierance worker. Mr W. Holland has also taken a leading part in church and temperance work. On behalf of the class, of twenty-seven members, Mr J. Carlisle presented Mr H. Holland with a Teacher's Bible, and on behalf of the officebearers and congregation Mr (Jhas. Rudd presented him and his wife with a handsomely framed address. The address was executed at the Press office, and was beautifully illuminated. Mr W. Holland was presented with a volume of Dr. Dale's sermons. Mr C. Gamble, who acted as chairman, and Beys. J. Clover and T. H. Lyon, and Messrs E. Hai'in, and J. T. Rudd spoke in the kindliest terms of the recipients of the gifts. Messrs Holland, in reply, referred in feeling terms to the sympathy and good fellowship displayed toward them during theii whole connection with the church. Mrs Walter Johnson, who was removed to another part of the circuit, was, on behalf oi the ladies, presented by Mrs John Rudd with a liandsonio teapot, Mrs Rudd speaking in very complimentary terms of the worth of the recipient. Mr Johnson suitably replied. During the evening some capital musical items were given by Messrs Roseveare and F. Johnson, Misses Kudd (3), and the choir. Miss A. Gongb was an efficient organist. At a meeting of residents of the Spreydon district it w;w unanimously decided to erect a swimming bath in connection with the school. A committee was formed to obtain full information and report at another meeting, and it was divided to send subscription lists through the district. At the weekly meeting of the Waikuku Bocia.l Society the editor and editress read a very interesting and amusing journal, and received a hearty vote of thanks. At a meeting of the Committee ox the Christeburch Cycling Club last evening, it was decided to institute monthly winter concerts
The first of the St. John Ambulance Association lectures in First Aid to men was given last night bj Dr. Orchard. Twenty-five attended, of whom eleven were policemen. There are still a few vacancies, and pupils joining the class next Tuesday will be in time to qualify for examination.
At the last meeting of the Christehurch Prohibition League several new members were nominated. The arrangements for the social on Friday weru reported. A sub-Com-mittee was appointed to deal with proposals for the more effective carrying out of temperance work.
The season of tlio Heller Mahatma Company concluded last night at the Theatre Koyal, when there was a very good house. All the items went capitally, and the audience wero very demonstrative in applause. The biograpb, Miss Vera Havlock's dance, and Mr Holler's mystifications, and Madame Heller's second sight made up an excellent programme. To-morrow the company appear at Lyttelton.
