A SPANISH ADMIRAL'S PRIDE.

Washington, May 9. Commodore Sampson announces his arrival off the Haytian coast, where he awaits the scouting vessels which are seeking information as to the movements of the Cape Verde Spanish fleet.
San Domingo officials report heavy cannonading off Monte Cristi. It is believed that Commodore Sampson has fallen in with and engaged the Spanish fleet. If he succeeds in destroying the Spanish vessels he will blockade and, if necessary, capture Puerto Rico.
Hong Kong, May 9. Admiral Dewey allowed Admiral Montiogo an opportunity to surrender, but the latter intimated his intention to fight and if needs be to die.
The Spanish fleet were surprised at anchor at Cavite.
