PREPARATIONS FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION.

The Wellington Post of yesterday says :— "We learn with pleasure that Mr John Roberts, CM.G., of the firm of Murray, Roberts and Co., of this city, will contest a southern constituency, the present representative of which has always been an obedient and uncomplaining follower of the present Government." The constituency Mr Roberts will contest, says our Wellington correspondent, is probably Taieri, which has bean represented now for a long time by Mr Curncross. "Mr Roberta is well known and very popular in the district, and should, I think, stand a good chance of winning the seat. The Opposition are getting some very good candidates ready for next election. Mr McHardy, who will stand in the Opposition interest against Mr Pirani, is also a strong candidate. There will be several candidates in the field here, and the votes will be a good deal split up."
