AN ASHBURTON RESIDENT DROWNED.
Mr Peter Leslie, an old resident of Hampstead, was drowned in the Ashburton river yesterday morning. He had gone with his boy to gather gorse sticks in the river bed. They drove across one stream, and having filled the cart with firewood started to return, both deceased and his son riding on top of the load. The water was very thick after the heavy rain of the previous night, and in crossing the stream the cart went down into a hole. Both father and son were thrown out of the cart, and Mr Leslie, who appears to have struck his head on tho bottom of the river, was drowned. The lad managed with difficulty to scramble out. The horse was drowned.
