MEETING AT LINWOOD.

A meeting of the Linwood Borough Council and ratepayers in Tuam street was held at the Council Chamber last evening for the purpose of considering the scheme prepared by the Council for the improvement of the Tuam street drain. There was a large attendance, and the Mayor presided. The Chatrmah explained that under the present scheme it was proposed to construct, with the consent of the City Council, a brick sewer 2ft 3in dear ; the estimated cost of which was £800. Towards this sum the Drainage Board was prepared to vote £270, which left the ratepayers £530 to find. The Council was taking steps to have Tuam street proclaimed a separate district under ,the Loans to Local Bodies Act, so that the money could be raised by way of loan. The valuation of the property in the street was £16,000, which would necessitate a rate with a contribution from the funds of the borough of s*l6tbofa penny to meet interest and sinking fund, the loan maturing in twenty years. The amount to be paid by each ratepayer would be very email* and he trusted that there would be no opposition to this necessary work. Crs. Board, Brunt, Marshall and Jamieson addressed the meeting, and impressed upon it the necessity of approaching the matter jn an unselfish spirit. It was essential that the present unhealthy drain should be done away with.

A number of questions were asked by ratepayers in regard to the scheme and the amount that would have to be paid annually by each ratepayer, and as the amount in all cases was a mere trifle, the scheme appeared to be satisfactory. After the matter had been fully discussed the following resolution was moved and carried:—"That the scheme put forward by the Council for the improvement of the Tuarn street drain meets with the approval of this meeting, and that the Council be asked to take the necessary steps for the carrying out of the eohenae."
